Artist's Comments

After having paid the cabbie Dr. Philbert T. Woodlocke surveyed the dark suburban street and with a loud sniff took relish in the fresh cool air. The evening was saturated with the scents of dew covered foliage and crickets provided a background orchestra so entirely more harmonious than the hustle and bustle of downtown Boston. The ride by carriage from the center of town hadn't taken long but out here one could almost forget that this was the modern world, hadn't it been for the lone street lamp proudly proclaiming that also in this remote street electricity had been installed.

The telegram had arrived just over two weeks ago, not long after that horrible affair where the public demonstration of his polyphase induction motor had gone anything but according to plan. Although too consumed by his work to pay much attention to the subsequent ridiculing string of articles in the Daily Telegraph and Courier, the prospect of this particular assignment combined with the fact that he was being more than generously paid for his expertise, came as a welcome distraction.

Dr. Woodlocke liked to describe himself as an Entrepreneur of the Known and Unknown Sciences and was as well versed in the empirical disciplines of chemistry, physics and mechanics as in the areas of the esoteric, the occult and the metaphysical. Hailing from an old and wealthy Wiltshire family, Dr. Woodlocke had been able to devote his entire adult life to the pursuit of knowledge and had slowly worked up quite a respectable reputation in the circles of academia both in England and abroad. In his many years of studying and combining disciplines hitherto separated by mutually exclusive paradigms, Dr. Woodlocke had approached some of the mechanisms already invented by pioneers in their own respective fields and added to these; fine tuning and altering them in order to construct apparatuses of which the world had never seen before… and most likely would not see until he deemed the time ready.

That time was yet to come and as for now, Dr. Woodlocke readied himself for the task ahead. He had hoped for an opportunity like this to arise in order to test out his latest theory and albeit slightly nervous about the procedure ahead, he straightened his back and clicked his tongue.

There was work to be done.
